Land Rover Series 2a Diesel 1962

  

It is in very good condition, the chassis is sound, as is the bulkhead. It is fitted with a 2.5 litre n/a diesel, a series gearbox (all synchromesh) and a wonderful Fairey overdrive. Over the last three years it has had a rolling restoration done by the previous owner. The chassis has been repaired to a high standard and along with the bulkhead, shows no sign of corrosion.

When I acquired the vehicle the chassis was clean (please see photos) and once I verified it was sound I waxoyled the entire underneath and inside the bulkhead. The attached photos are of the underneath before it was rustproofed to show how good it is. The engine smokes a little for a few seconds on start-up (don't they all) and then clears well, with no smoke at all when driving or idling. The gearbox is good, smooth and does not jump out of second (or any) gear.

The brakes have been overhauled and have had new shoes on the front as needed. New road springs were fitted on the front and NOS springs were fitted on the rear, with all new U - bolts.

The doors are fairly new as are the tops with no signs of bi-metallic corrosion along the frame rails. New under wing splash guards and steering box cover were fitted. The vehicle now meets the criterion for MOT exemption, but had it's last MOT with no advisories.

I have added a tow bar and genuine Land Rover front and rear mud flaps as well as rear lamp guards. There is a non-matching middle seat from a later defender as well as rear seat pads. It is shod with a. Matching set of 5 Deestone'Extra traction' tyres - a middle of the road tyre, in the correct size. The paintwork has been done by hand and is done well, but not as pristine as you'd get with a spray gun.

However, the trim was removed to do the paint, as well as the lower floor panels, which have been renewed. No doubt other issues will arise through time, as they always do! Obviously with it being nearly 56 years old it's probably been apart a few times in the past, but everything fits well and has been done to a high standard.

This land rover has had all the expensive parts done, the reason for the hand finished paintwork was that the last owner was going to use it for a bit of green laning, but decided against it once it was finished. If you are looking for a totally original S2a, then this one's probably not for you. If you want a S2a that has been repaired with LR parts and without significant issue, this may be the one. So to sum up, this Land Rover is as cute as a box of puppies.

Its finish is perfectly acceptable but is such that you don't have to be too precious about using it. As it stands, you could use it'as is' - and enjoy it for many years, you could take it off road and really have some fun, or you could go to town and restore it back to'mint' condition - the choice is yours. A couple of caveats - please be sure that a Series vehicle is what you want. They are slow and noisy (although this one's not too bad) and the outside weather will meet you inside on occasion. Remember it was made in 1962. As for any mod cons, the answer is usually'sorry, no'. Also the vehicle is in Orkney, off the top of.
