I bought this 1983 (a Reg) 12v GS Lightweight with a valid MOT, iffy brakes fitted with an extremely quite Ford Transit 2.5 Kent diesel engine Not! My plan was to get it to an acceptable and safe standard and use it for a number of years. Within a few months I realised this was not going to be an acceptable process, so here is what I have done to it. Diesel engine out and a nice 3MB engine in. This required new OS engine mount.

I had the gearbox out at the same time and overhauled the parking drum with new shoes and oil seal. It now will hold the vehicle on a hill! I know this year should have a 5MB fitted but this one is so nice I had to use it. Brake master and slave cylinders all round with new pipes.

Stainless Steel exhaust front to back with all new fittings. NOS driver door (still in box) and reconditioned passenger door (bought when I was on holiday in Cyprus and came back courtesy of Easy Jet) complete with new door tops and all door seals (Not Cheap).

Cylinder Head Gasket with decoke. Hoses all round with period clips. Front lower bumper (bumperettes are reconditioned). Late type wing mirrors correctly fitted to upper door hinge. Rear NS toolbox (despite the correct one fitted under the bonnet too). Added Kenlow fan for peace of mind (temp gauge shows running high but engine temp at top and bottom hoses suggests otherwise). Brush painted entire bodywork in Olive Drab satin.

Rear number plate back where it should be with a new stud and pins. Added a rear NATO hitch (with new pins) and trailer socket (not wired). Tyres and wheels are excellent and matched (spare is good but not the same as road wheels). Both tanks were removed cleaned and treated to several coats of Smoothrite. All old diesel pipes removed and replaced with new.

Two way switch works fine. Chassis is excellent with one 10p piece sized repair just below the chassis number on the OS dumb iron. Painted all over with Black Smoothrite. Vent panel is perfect as is the bulkhead. Tilt is faded but serviceable.

Repairs to quarter panel using new repair panels (both were rusted at the top where the wing bolts to it door hinge area is perfect). Removed, painted and remounted the seat belt bracket using spreader plates between the bracket and tub. Same goes for the chassis mount brackets below. I have obtained the B Card which shows it spent a number of years at VSD before entering service with 39 Inf Bde and then 11 UDR before demob.

It is clear that this lightweight (because of the bodywork bolt holes) was fitted with a VPK for service in NI and was therefore a mini pig. It will come with a selection of spares including a starter motor, alternator and two reconditioned rear tub cross members (one of mine is showing bimetal corrosion not MOT failure though) Just never got round to fitting. Everything works including the heater but it is not wired as I cant fathom out the five way switch!

Only know deviation from standard military spec is the addition of the fan and a very loud but discrete Italian horn compressor fitted in front of the battery between the rad and wing.
