Welcome to the sale of my Series IIA Land Rover. Please contact me with any questions, and viewings are welcome. The vehicle is MOTd until December 2017. Vehicle located in Broughty Ferry, Scotland. I have owned it since November 2013. XBD 568J is registered as, and carries the correct VIN plate for a 1970 Series 2A Land Rover. It is a Long Wheel Base (109) 2286cc Petrol. It has been fitted with a Series 3 Dash and gearbox, which are both 1970 originals as far as I can tell. The series 3 was for MY 1971, so run-out Series 2As like XBD were fitted with whatever parts were available in the changeover period. I can only assume it is either this, or because its had a gearbox/dash swap at some point unrecorded, which is the reason why it has these. The later Series 3 gearbox is a major improvement because it has Synchromesh on all 4 gears, rather than on just 3. Other than that, it carries the correct S2A parts. If you are looking for an immaculate Series IIA, this is not it. It is however a very solid, well maintained, unmolested Classic Land Rover which is in great condition for its age and very useable. This is not a non-running project, rather a complete, running, road-worthy Land Rover. XBD Doesnt have a particularly known history. XBD has had several previous owners. XBD is in great working order. It has had all the chassis repairs currently needed done, as it is still riding on the original chassis.

Bodywork is generally good, with a bit of surface rust on the bulkhead, but the rest of it is aluminium alloy and unaffected by rust. It has a new galvanised steel rear floor in it, as well as new front floor sections. Engine and gearbox are working perfectly, the engine has had an ignition rebuild and a brand-new carburettor in my time, along with following the factory maintenance schedule to the letter which includes oil changes at 3000 miles etc. No valve lash when hot and compression is good, however it still has soft valve seats so needs lead additive in the fuel. The gearbox has never presented any challenges, all the synchros are fine and it feels remarkably tight and snicky for such an old car.

Gearbox and Transfer box oil always comes out clean and got changed annually in my ownership, along with the Engine oil. The transfer case is also in perfect working order. The selectable four-wheel drive and High/Low ratio gearbox all work as they should. Both output shaft seals front and rear have been replaced, and the handbrake on the back of the gearbox has been rebuilt with new shoes. The rear propshaft has had new bearings in the spiders at both ends, and the front got new spider bearings on the transfer case end.

Both props have always been kept greased. The rear Salisbury Heavy Duty axle is in excellent condition. The ring and pinion gears are fantastic inside the diff, as are the halfshafts.

The rear diff cover had gotten thin and blown a small pinprick hole through so that was replaced with a new cover a few months ago which was painted and a new gasket used. The rear suspension is working perfectly too.

The leaf springs and their hangers are solid and not corroded, and it had two new rear shock absorbers fitted. Front diff is in good condition, and had its input oil seal renewed to cure a leak. Front half shafts are also fine. The front swivels on both sides are absolutely fine, with the chrome swivel balls free of the scrapes and chips heavy off-road use can cause. The swivel housing oil seals, especially on the right hand side, leak oil however and need new seals fitted eventually. Front springs and hangers are even better than the rears, and the front shocks are currently fine with no leaks but are not new. The exhaust is currently fine, it has a Britpart exhaust fitted from the manifold back. The Land Rover has had its rear wheel bearings replaced, and all its bearings were adjusted. I have the socket for the wheel bearings to go with the car. Brakes all round are good, it got a new drum on one corner where the original was warped and oval. Shoes had plenty meat on them the last time they were off, about 18 months ago. I suspect that the brake master cylinder is starting to need some new seals, as it allows the pressure that should always hold the brakes slightly on leak out, so on the first use of the pedal it moves a little further down than it should before biting. There is still plenty pedal left and will still lock up the brakes on first pedal application. The vehicle has two sets of wheels. One is an offroading set with 31x10.5R15 Mud Tyres on.

The other set is a more road biased 205/80R16 all terrain. The off-road tyres are old and slightly split in places but have been fine in my time and perfectly fine for off-road use. I painted the roof and the sides of the hard-top 3 years ago.

One side of the lower bodywork has been freshly painted and the other side was to follow. All the paint was applied with a roller and is fine for the kind of vehicle it is. The rear-left wing was dented on its only serious offroading adventure, when the tyre dropped into a rut and the bottom of the wing was struck by a rock and dented in a little, as you can see in the pictures/. This has never bothered me particularly, but could be straightened with the correct technique.

The front doors are of a split design. The door bottoms and tops are solid but something in the join of the two is misaligned so the doors dont fit quite as flush as they should, allowing some draught but no water leaks. Lastly, the chassis is the original one and has been patched in the past. It is currently solid and has had any repairs needed done in my ownership. List of noteable work carried out, to the best of my memory. Transfer box shafts rebuilt for functionality. Transfer box oil seals renewed front and rear. Handbrake rebuilt and adjusted with new shoes.

Rear prop spider bearings replaced both ends. Front prop spider bearings replaced rear end. Front diff pinion oil seal renewed. Both steering boxes serviced with oil (second box weeps slightly). Rebuilt distributor new points, rotor arm, condenser, Cap.

New HT Leads and spark plugs. Replaced an aftermarket Weber carb with a reproduction Zenith OE Carb. Full engine services including tappets etc. New inlet/exhaust manifold gasket and nuts. New exhaust system from downpipe back (Now 3 years old back section replaced again 5 months ago, other sections seem to not rust as its the silencer that collects water in the exhaust and rusts out).

Coolant flushed and replaced every 2 years. Brake fluid renewed 18 months ago. New Halogen headlights to replaced failed sealed beam type. New air-horn fitted, original still there but not really loud enough. New electric washer bottle fitted.

New front floor sections, new transmission tunnel, new floor mats. Rear aluminium floor replaced with galvanised steel floor for better strength and corrosion resistance (The original aluminium floor electrolytically corroded against the steel reinforcing beams under the floor). Rear floor now removable rather than spot welded in to give better access for any future chassis repairs.

Roof and hardback sides painted. Wheel bearings adjusted at all corners. Fuel line replaced at the top of the tank. Chassis corrosion repaired by cutting out old patched sections and welding in new box steel. Chassis fully cleaned and painted including on top of chassis rails.

Rear door hinge brass fittings renewed and hinges painted. Underbonnet components stripped back and repainted black. Servicing schedule always followed to the letter this included annual oil changes of the Engine, both diffs, both swivel housings, gearbox, transfer case, and both steering boxes. Also included greasing of both propshafts and steering ball joints, as well as usual check and adjust of brakes, tappets, ignition system, air filter oil change, carb tune and more.
