For sale here is my 1973 Land Rover Lightweight (Half Ton). I bought the Landy as a barn find project and have done some work on it over the summer including. Getting the 2.25 petrol engine starting and running. (starts on the key now). Replacing both 12v starter batteries (24v starter and generator).
Sorting the cooling system and replacing lower radiator hose. Partial sorting of the fuel system. New spark plugs and HT leads. Reason for sale is that I have to go back to work now so wont have any time to do anything more anytime soon so I would rather the Lightweight goes to someone with the time and energy to restore it further over the winter. Good things about the Lightweight. Log book/registration document V5C present and in my name. Landy has all the Military Tags / VIN tags present. Other than front door tops and window glass, its a complete vehicle (the roof glass is in the back of the car). It comes with original keys. It comes with a functional full hardtop. Unusual Maroon colour (original green paint under that). Mileage recorded 91,321 (believed accurate) is fairly low and typical of a military vehicle.Other than the original 24v alternator/generator, remainder of starting electrics properly converted by a previous owner to 12v. Full set of new owners/operating/parts manuals. I have obtained her previous military history records which show she was originally deployed to the Armed Trials Development Unit (which I think was in Bovington Dorset) on 1. They may have been responsible for the very unusual 2 x folding seats in the rear tub.
Functional freewheeling hubs on both front wheels. Has a separate period radio, cassette and 8 track fitted! Things that will need doing. Chassis is covered with what appears to be the original military underseal.
There are holes in various places that will need weld repair, but the underseal really needs to be scraped off to check the whole chassis properly. Bulkhead (is separate upper and lower bulkheads on a Lightweight). Top bulkhead has rusted out under the air vents and needs localised repair or replacement (detaches relatively easily).Lower bulkhead is repairable but will need replacement footwell panels and hinge support panels welding in both sides (all these panels readily available). Ive cut out some of the corrosion here already, along with some historic glass fibre footwell repairs.
Clutch and brakes currently not functional (pedals go to the floor) so they will need going through. 24v alternator/generator currently spins ok with no odd noises but is not currently putting out a charge. I believe the rectifier function will need fixing/replacing which is not uncommon for the Lightweight. Front doors inside support strips of doors are corroded so will need localised repairs or replacements. Engine currently starts and runs off a temporary fuel tank, but ideally main tank would need another clean/flush before reconnecting that to the brand new carburettor.
Lightweight is in secure storage about 15 mins from my house in Southbourne, Bournemouth. I think thats about it. Happy to show any interested parties around the Landy as and when required.
