Land Rover 1955 Series 1 86. Reluctant sale of my Series 1 Land Rover which is not getting the use it deserves.
I have been checking through my records and it has only done 700 miles or so in the 7 years I have owned it and I would prefer it to go to someone who will use it, and appreciate it. The vehicle is rather special in that it has spent its entire 63 year life in Pembrokeshire. I bought it from the son of the original owner, a local farmer who bought it new off the Land Rover stand at the 1955 Royal Welsh agricultural show. I have put a picture in the gallery of the vehicle being used back in 1955.
I bought the vehicle in 2011 and spent another year or so restoring it which was mostly mechanical work. I replaced the entire braking system, and also rebuilt the front swivels on each side with new chrome balls / seals / bearings and the swivel pins themselves. The drivers footwell was corroded so this was replaced, and also a small repair to the offside door pillar. Please note that this is a totally original vehicle, not a series 2 or 3 with a Series 1 body on top like alot of the vehicles for sale.
The engine, gearbox, transfer box and axles are all original with matching numbers, as is everything mechanical, the radiator is date stamped 8M55 (8th Month 1955) I even have the original coil with a 1955 date stamp on it! The steering column / wheel is the original one with the dipswitch in the hornpush. Most Series 1s have been fitted with later series items.
Also fitted are the rare Avon Traction Mileage pattern tyres (including spare). I have also fitted the rare combined oil pressure / temp gauge. This is a restored original part not a modern repro. There is a new SU fuel pump of the correct type.
The lights are the correct Lucas ones on the front and the original (very expensive) "pork pie" type ones on the rear. I have changed the engine oil every spring despite it averaging less than 100 miles a year. All other fluids were changed also.
Engine hoses were new and also the flexible fuel hose. I fitted a brand new SU electric fuel pump last year. Please note that the reg number will not go with the vehicle. It is my own not the original one as this was taken off by the son of the original owner, so I will have to wait for the documentation for that to come back before it goes. I would like the Land Rover to go to a good home and if it doesn't go to the right person and for the right price I will keep it a bit longer.
I would rather see someone use it but these early Land Rovers are also fine investments. These completely original vehicles are hard to find.
