1967 Land Rover Series 2a 109 Straight Six. Land Rover Series 2a 2.6L Straight Six LWB.
Here we have a remarkable vehicle, an essentially one owner from new 1967 Series 2a rare straight 6 on a Richard's galvanized chassis rebuilt and ready to use! (By trade a tractor mechanic) This chap is one of my customers and he set about restoring this fantastically rare vehicle that has a nice local history and certainly worth saving. Any old Series vehicle needs careful attention paying to the bulkhead and chassis so these were the first items to be replaced/repaired and freshly painted up.
The basis of any great rebuild/restoration.... All of the vehicle was stripped bare, repaired/replaced, painted and put back together, this took my customer 18 months to complete and some considerable financial investment. We have a whole album of pictures detailing the vehicle in it's original condition and a few pictures of the vehicle being built up along the restoration process. I will list as best as I can what has been done. Started out life as a pick-up but was converted in the early 1970's to a hard-top using new parts, apparently the farmers brother worked for a Land Rover dealer and new parts were sourced, the bonnet was damaged on the farm and also replaced at some point with a round edge type, the rest is original just re painted, she has all of the dents acquired over it's life still present, no filler in this one and no cheap aftermarket panels. The inside rear is untouched and original. Original radiator re-cored- Braking system mostly replaced, has factory servo assistance as it's a heavy duty model.Engine runs great, a different world of performance compared to the 4 pot despite only slightly more power she is nice and smooth, wants to rev, and peak torque is at only 1500RPM opposed to the 4s peak torque at 2500RPM, that makes a huge difference when on the road. Perfect, gearbox is very nice to use, no whine, no hard selection and tricky downshifts.
Four wheel drive and low range work perfectly as do the free-wheeling hubs. The rest of the drive line is very tight with no knocking or back-lash when selecting gears, a pleasure to drive.
Much better than a SWB in my opinion. Very tight and surprisingly light, box has been stripped and rebuilt so has minimal free-play, very easy to place on the road. Original wheels running the correct cross-ply tyres that are new. Original wiring loom in good condition with everything working as it should. Factory fitted heated with no leaks and fully working variable speed. Has factory fitted seat belts still in place with the very old Rover badge on the labels, all of the seats are original with plenty of wear! Not bad for a 50 year old working vehicle. Original chain link floor mats, very rare indeed....... Do not underestimate the finance and time involved in such a project, the bulkhead and chassis alone will set you back over 5K before you have even bought a base vehicle.....
