Land Rover Series III 109 2.25D. Please visit our website for more photos! 1977 model on original, stamped chassis. 4cyl 3 main bearing diesel engine, coupled to a 4spd manual transmission. (Look to be) reconditioned ex-military axles.
LWB steel wheels with 7.50x16 radial all-terrain tyres. Sensible upgrades include full length galvanised Brownchurch roof rack and ladder, wing mounted Pioneer tools, mesh dog/cargo guard, tow bar and electrics, halogen headlights, rear work lamp, interior light, inertia seat belts and a centre cubby box with cup holders and FM/MP3 stereo. Was launched in 1971, and didnt change a great deal from the Series IIA that preceded it. It is still the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and its shape was carried right through from the Series II to the most recent Defender, which only this year has ceased production after its long 67 year life.
Upgrades from the Series IIA included a full synchromesh gearbox, new dashboard with integral heater and instrument cluster and radiator grille, and a much stronger Salisbury rear axle for LWB models. This particular model is the archetypal Deep Bronze Green Hard Top long wheel base (109) with Limestone roof and wheels. It fires up after a short glow plug, settling down to a steady tick over.It does smoke mildly until warm, a normal trait on these diesel engines of this age. It pulls fine on the road, steadily climbing to a cruising speed of 45-50mph. All gears select perfectly and the low range and four wheel drive work as they should. It will pull up to a stop nice and straight with a firm press on the brakes no servo assistance on these old beasts! The axles look to be reconditioned ex-military units; the chrome swivels are excellent, and the springs are fairly new all round.
On the road or off it, the vehicle is very capable, and actually rides quite comfortably for an old Series with leaf springs! The vehicle known as Chugnobyl!
Is in good condition overall. The chassis, bulkhead and door tops are very solid; the chassis having had a few patches welded in to a good standard, and only the passenger side foot well has had a new section let in. The body work is good and straight; the paintwork has been roller painted (well) in Deep Bronze Green, which doesnt detract from the vehicle at all. The right hand side aluminium wing has a minor crack in it on the lower quarter; which is only a cosmetic issue. All new lamp lenses all round; and there is an LED work lamp on the rear of the roof which is very useful for night time loading or reversing.
The full length galvanised roof rack is in good condition, and has a access ladder mounted on the rear; ideal for those weekends away camping, ladders, fence panels or anything that is too large/long to go inside the vehicle. If you manage to yourself into a spot of bother, there is a military specification Pioneer spade and pick axe mounted on the front wings! The interior is excellent; with good black vinyl front seats and a useful central cubby box, along with front and rear rubber mats. There is a FM/MP3/USB stereo in the cubby box for the tunes, and a jack and wheel brace are supplied.
The only faults of mention are that the speedometer over reads by approx. 10mph, and end of the ignition key has snapped off inside the barrel it still works perfectly fine. The vehicle has a very long MoT until 13. The odometer reads 85,327. This versatile old Land Rover would make a fantastic investment that can be used, enjoyed and cherished, ideal for those weekend camping trips, a longer expedition trip or safari, fishing or shooting trips, or even to put to work collecting logs from the woods in winter etc work or play or both!We have described the vehicle as accurately as we can, but please take your time looking through the photos. All funds must be cleared before the vehicle can be taken away.
