Hard to see from any distance. Shortly after I bought the Landy, the original engine gave up the ghost so I contacted a local Land Rover expert and asked for a replacement unit. Unable to find a decent original block, the replacement engine is a 1990s Discovery 200TDi engine, fitted by Richard Hall of Glencoyne Engineering - a local Landy specialist. The Turbo was removed to reduce the power from 130hp to about 80, thereby not stressing the original gearbox.
It is now fairly perky for a diesel Landy and keeps up with traffic. Whilst in Richard's hands, I had the car fully serviced and lubricated from end to end, all oils changed and greases refreshed so it's good to go. The gearbox is sweet and smooth, as is the transfer box.
Everything in the transmission works as it should. There is a Fairey overdrive fitted too, which also works as it should. Compared to a modern car, it is still a noisy car to drive, as Landy diesels of that era all appear to be but it will go anywhere and pull pretty much anything. The car does NOT have a galvanised chassis (everyone asks). It appears to be mostly original and sound. The rear cross-member has been replaced in the recent past and the central one has had some adequate welding done.
Not neatly, but more than adequate in strength and sufficiency (said the MoT tester). Whilst on about the underside and metalwork, all the floorpans are sound with light corrosion in the usual places, the footwells have been replaced and the metalwork at the scuttles is solid. The suspension has been upgraded to parabolic springs which makes for a much smoother ride. To pass the recent MoT (for the sale), I have had the front of the chassis, just behind the bumper, welded as it had minor corrosion, which the tester wasn't happy with. There were a couple of minor advisories as one would expect with a 48 yr old Landy but nothing he was concerned about.Internally all is pretty much standard Series. New seats have been fitted. The footwells are bare and display the lack of corrosion. A previous owner, for some reason, glued down a sheet of thick black plastic and this is evident on the footwell panels in both front wells. Some of it has been removed, leaving glue on top of the blue paint.
I shall leave it to the new owner to do with this as they see fit. I have a roll of soundproofing if you wish it, or you can keep it original or fit carpets or whatever you wish. The rear tub has loose carpet on the floor and new inward facing bench seats fitted on both sides.
There is an LED interior light fitted to the interior roof. The last owner fitted military side doors with modern handles and locks for security.
I have an old pair of door skins should you wish to go back to the original'lift handle' type doors. I have tried to be scrupulously honest as I don't want people coming to view it and being disappointed. It is a 48 year old Landrover which has been loved, given a new engine and made to look smart. There is, however, plenty of fettling still to do, should you so wish. It is a solid serviceable Landrover, with a newly-fitted.
