Series 2a SWB Land Rover (1963)

  

This vehicle was subject to what is described as a'full restoration' some years ago, documented by photographs. I have managed to get most of the remaining deficiencies sorted and both positive and negative points are listed below.

It suffered accident damage with the previous owner, but in spite of a few dents still looks presentable. I used it for my Gardening business until retiring a couple of years ago and it is no longer doing enough work to justify keeping it. On top of that, I have a more comfortable classic to finish off and fund! The later 17H 2.5 litre engine, which runs on lead-free fuel was fitted during the'restoration' together with an alternator and halogen headlights. In my ownership, a towball, new swivels, battery, lighting/ignition switch, O/S door top, exhaust system, clutch and bonnet mount for the spare wheel have been fitted.

Not the fastest thing on four wheels, it nevertheless performs reliably, rides well without running gear rattles, clonks or wandering steering. The gearbox is original S2a with synchro on 3rd and top only. It does not jump out of any gear. The chassis has been welded in places and looks to have had a replacement rear crossmember. The vehicle has only covered 329 miles since its last MOT test and had a brake service recently.

It is fitted with Colway tyres. On the downside, the canvas tilt is past its best, 4WD is inoperative at the transfer box end, probably down to worn linkages; low ratio is fine though. The O/S A post is sound but twisted forwards at the top which compromises the door and windscreen alignment. The O/S door skin is creased, but the frame is reasonable. The frames for the tilt are also bent (this is the accident damage referred to in first paragraph, see photographs).

There is a slight leak on the N/S rear half-shaft/hub joint, most likely a blocked breather on the axle. The (round Smiths) heater leaks and has been by-passed. At some point it has been allocated a non-transferable age-related registration number. The vehicle has served me well over the seven years I have had it and is usable as is or for ongoing improvement and further restoration.
